Boo doo doot doot doot, Another one writes, discuss...

(Sad and strained Queen reference in the title)
Well, I used to list my favorite blogs every so often, but I have forgotten my numbering, and I'm too lazy to go look. So, a guy I've had the privledge of playing some music and worshiping with, Nate Brown done all growed up and got himself off of MySpace. His blog has the "I wish I'd thought of it" title of Annotated Nathanography. There aren't too many posts there yet, but I find in conversing with him he's fairly insightful and interesting. I'm watching to see him apply that to a blog. (no pressure).
And no, it's not just returning the "link love", or I could have quietly added him to the link box and said nothing. Not to mention how it'd screw up that whole "authenticity" discussion that flew around the our microcosm of the Christian Blogosphere a few months back.

By the way, proud dad video over at Growing Up Dad.

Sick geekery.

Occasionally I use this old Toshiba notebook to do some web surfing while relaxing on the couch. It's a bear though, cause while it has a 1 GHz P4 in it, it only has 128 MB of ram and a slow hard drive. By the time I run all the anti-virus and anti-spyware stuff I need to safely use a Windows box, it just crawls.

To make a long, geeky story short(er), I set up an old PC in the office. I run it headless (No monitor, keyboard or mouse) and I remote access it from the Macintosh, mostly to dump backups to. That right there is geeky enough for most people I know.

Now, mostly out of morbid curiosity, I decided to tunnel into the office PC from the laptop. That worked fine, so I fired up a web browser. So, to be clear, I'm using remote desktop to access a PC in the office and using Firefox on THAT PC instead of Firefox on THIS PC. Sadly and strangely, I am browsing much faster. I guess that the machine in there is more capable of doing the heavy lifting, and is just blasting pixels over here for me to look at. This will probably be the way I do it from now on.

Now suddenly I am wondering, if I throw an old copy of Photoshop for PC on that machine, can I suddenly do production work lying on the couch? This could result in a whole new level of laziness for me. Or would that be making my laziness productive... I dunno. The whole thing seems awful weird though.

(Honey, if you are reading this, all this tom-foolery could be stopped with a new Macbook.)

UPDATE: You Tube is unusable over the remote connection. Bummer.

Indescribable

Mere words cannot describe this performance of the Iron Maiden tune "Aces High". A dramatic song about a WWII fighter pilots, the song showcases the vocal dexterity of an "in his prime" Bruce Dickinson.
...Then Chule sang it, as only he could, and the song was transformed. Some covers stick with you forever. Sinead O'Connor's "Nothing Compares 2 U". Van Halen's "You Really Got Me". Social Distortion's "Ring of Fire". And now, Chule's "Aces High". Pay special attention to the audio engineer.

20 years of helping surfers pee in their wetsuits...

It's hard to believe I've been watching Shark Week for 20 years. I remember being about 14 or 15 hanging out at Cabrillo Beach with my other surf buddies, anticipating the first Shark Week. It was a mixture of scary and cool. We fancied ourselves water men (water boys?) capable of handling anything the ocean could hold for us. Yeah.

I never saw anything diving any bigger than a two or three foot leopard shark, but I was at a cove in Palos Verdes with my buddy when they pulled a 7 foot leopard out of the water. We left pretty quick after that. It does get in your head. I did a very modest amount of body boarding and snorkling this year and I had to put it out of my mind. And it took a bit. So, I already had a healthy respect for sharks. Shark Week tends to split 50/50 between fearsome apex predator and awe inspiring endangered species.

This year, being a stay at home dad has meant I've seen a LOT of Shark Week. I think they are beautiful. ...And best enjoyed from a distance. I know you are more likely to be hit by lightning than be attacked by a shark. I'd rather win the lottery than either.
